But it stopped for some times from 2 March as
North Korea requested not to use a provisional
highway for railroad and highway construction
of the Donghae line. Government or enterprisers
has kept requesting sightseeing by land through
the conference between authorities or between
enterprisers. As a result, South and North Korea
have agreed to reopen of sightseeing by land in
the 5th meeting of South and North Korea Economy
Cooperation Committee and has carried out since
1 Sep. Tourists of 34,432 visited Mt. Geumgang
by land by Dec. 2003.
Tourists by land have started from CIQ, which
is located in Unification observatory, Goseong-gun,
Gangwon-do, and passed by DMZ. Starting by sea
and coming back by land is possible as well. Mt.
Geumgang sightseeing by land is conducted every
other day and duration is 3 days and 2 nights.
It is carried out every day in Oct, high-demand
season. Sightseeing by land has a few of advantages;
less expense, saving 100,000 won, and less travel
time compared with sightseeing by sea.
Mt. Geumgang sightseeing by land has activated
tourism exchange and contributed to ease of tension
in a military way and improvement of cooperation
between South and North Korea. South Korean of
10,000 passed by DMZ monthly and military authorities
meeting between South and North Korea has been
conducted every day. Therefore, Mt. Geumgang sightseeing
by land is expected to be a foundation for sightseeing
linked to Mt. Seolak in a middle and long-term
