HomeEcology White Paper of DMZComposition of ecosystemRestoration & control of an ecosystem

The DMZ and regions nearby are the treasurehouse of biological diversity. However it is hard to say that the function of forest ecosystem is being well revealed. There are regions where the nature is preserved quite well, but most regions show inconvenient location with many reasons including military drills. The summary on the restoration and management of the natural ecosystem for each region is presented in the following section.

East coast region
In this region, the forest ecosystem at the North Korean side is very poor. First, the damaged ecosystem should be restored in order for the function of the forest ecosystem to be revealed. The plan for the conservation of environment in places such as Hwajinpo, where black swan etc, uniquely exists in South Korea should be designed. Especially, since area is the region that connects the mid-eastern mountainous region with Sorak mountain and Geumgang mountain, the original forest ecosystem should be restored.

Mid-eastern mountainous region
By conserving the top and ridgeline where the musk deer and goral inhabit and places near the valley where they come down for food, the ecosystem could be conserved systematically resulting in the natural conservation of the habitats of amphibians, reptiles and fishes. Since this region contains excellent forest ecosystem it is necessary to restore the damaged areas that break off their habitat and establish strategies to improve this place into an international conservation area after the Sorak, Geumgang mountain and the East coast region.

Mid-western inland region
The forest ecosystem of this region corresponds to the most significant zone in the DMZ and nearby regions, which are referred to as the most important region in the country. However, the forest resources and the biological diversities are more deteriorated than in the mid-eastern mountainous region. Therefore the restoration and recovery project of damaged ecosystem should be planned for the general, reasonable conservation and use of the DMZ. The mediation of the farming method in the Cheorwon plains and the management of migratory birds ¡®habitat should be planned. The farm-forest ecosystem unificative control strategy is also required to naturally connect the wetlands and nearby mountainous districts.

West coast region
The Imjin river downstream river valley of this region has many wetlands ecologically excellent. It is connected to the tidland playing important role as wild animal habitats and as farming land after being developed into a broad plain. However it is also a region where the environment of location of the forest ecosystem is the worst with frequent flood and landslide. The forest is in urgent need of restoration.

Western island region
This region has poor condition of location except some pine forest and Carpinus coreana forest at Daecheongdo. The restoration and recovery of the damaged ecosystem is required. Luckily some excellent ecosystem such as the habitats of pelagic cormorant at Dumujin, Baengnyeongdo still remains. These should be connected by chain of ecology and be conserved.
